Lodges in Alaska

Lodges in Alaska

Our Lodge in Alaska is spread out along the banks of the Niukluk River, in the heart of the Seward Peninsula, where our fishing camp is located. This is a friendly place far away from all the hurry-scurry of city life. Remote and untouched beauty surrounds you no matter the season.

Seward Peninsula in Alaska

Located on the southwest coast of the Seward Peninsula is Nome, Alaska, along the Bering Sea. It has a population of approximately 3,900 and a subarctic climate. However, winters in Nome are generally milder than those in the interior of the peninsula. Average temperatures range from 5℉ in January to 52℉ in July, with interior areas often experiencing warmer summer temperatures. During the summer months, daylight can last up to 20 hours, thanks to the northern latitude.

Many Alaska Native residents maintain both a "summer camp" and a "winter home." In summer, they often relocate near rich fishing rivers to support a subsistence lifestyle. In winter, they may return to Nome, where conditions are somewhat less harsh.

Alaskan Lodge History

Alaskan Lodge

The history of our Alaskan lodge begins with Tom, who has been fishing the region’s Niukluk river system since the early 1970s. In the early 1980s, Tom established a reindeer herd, which kept him living year-round in rural Alaska. When the herd declined in the mid-1990s, we shifted our focus to fishing and hunting. The lodge itself began as a subsistence camp in the early 1980s, and in 2024, we took steps to revive our reindeer herd by borrowing reindeer and working to rebuild the herd.

Throughout the year, we continue to gather traditional native foods in the way of the Eskimo* tradition. Summer is spent harvesting wild greens, berries, and drying fish. Fall brings opportunities to hunt moose, muskox, and bear. Everything we harvest is used to prepare native dishes, and by March, we typically have a moose and muskox stored in the freezer. Come mid-May, we turn to waterfowl, hunting ducks and geese as the seasons shift once again.

Note: In Alaska, the term "Eskimo" is commonly used and generally refers to the Iñupiat peoples, as recognized by the Alaska Native Language Center.
