Guided Fishing Trips in Alaska

Fishing Trips on Seward Alaska
At Alaskan Northwest Adventures we offer fishing trips at our remote fishing lodge on the Seward Peninsula; here you’ll find unmatched angling opportunities. This region is home to some of the finest fishing in the world. From bait and fly fishing to seine netting with traditional tools, our fishing guides know these waters like the backs of their hands.
Fishing Trips Near Nome Alaska
We offer fishing trips near Nome, Alaska starting in the summer in mid-June when the fishing season comes alive. Trout and grayling are the first to appear, followed by runs of salmon from late June through early September. During the summer in early July, we visit a different river system for the red salmon run, a crucial time when fish are harvested, cut, dried, and preserved for the winter. Some are smoked, some soaked in rendered seal oil, following traditional native practices.

Seine Netting
Fishing adventures don’t end with the rod and reel because we offer seine netting. Every year we use a 140-foot seine net to gather up to 500 salmon near our hunting lodge. The fish are processed with traditional ulus, dried, and smoked in our 8'x10' smokehouse. It’s a time-honored routine that sustains families through the long Alaskan winter.

Seasonal Living

Our way of life in Nome & White Mtn is guided by the rhythm of nature. From the awe-inspiring sight of ice breaking up on the river in May, to the bird migrations and early summer greens, everything is part of a seasonal living cycle. We gather greens like beach parsley and Eskimo potato; some soaked in seal oil as our ancestors did.
Into summer by late July, berries start to ripen, blueberries, salmonberries, and highbush cranberries, which we turn into jam. Come September, nearing the end of summer, we hunt for silver salmon and begin pressure-cooking jars of fish for winter storage.

From May to October, we live closely with the land. When the rivers freeze in mid-October, we slow down and wait for safe ice. Though things are quieter in November and December, ptarmigan hunting and trips to various camps keep us connected to the land.
Seasonal Gathering & Traditional Alaskan Foods
-
May - June: Pick ocean greens and wild leaves, often soaked in traditional seal oil.
-
July - August: Harvest blueberries, salmonberries, and Eskimo potatoes (machu).
-
September: Cranberries and highbush berries go into jellies and jams.
-
Seal Oil & Smokehouses: From silver salmon to dried greens, we follow the methods passed down for generations.

Gold Mining in Alaska: Then and Now

Nome was once the largest city in Alaska thanks to the gold rush of 1899. Back then, prospectors flocked to pan for gold in streams and beaches. Over the years, more than 3.6 million ounces have been recovered. Today, offshore suction dredges still comb the seabed for gold, while a few dinosaur-era dredges stand as relics of the past. Some are still in operation, or being restored.
-
Historic Gold Rush – Nome exploded in 1899, becoming Alaska’s largest city.
-
Modern-Day Dredging – Offshore mining still happens today—see it for yourself!

Alaska Ecotourism

Our Alaska ecotourism tours are deeply rooted in the traditions of Native Alaskan life. We offer ecotourism experiences that include both nature treks and cultural education. Visitors might help drive reindeer to the river, visit smokehouses, or learn about traditional food preservation techniques.
Beluga Whale Hunting
In September, we go beluga whale hunting, as part of our cultural heritage and as a vital source of winter sustenance. I serve as the head of the Alaska Beluga Whale Committee and have helped tag whales for satellite tracking to improve our understanding of their patterns. I’m also active on local advisory boards related to fish, game, reindeer herding, and caribou management. Our team also serves on local subsistence boards and fish/game committees, ensuring our traditions and wildlife thrive together.
